Baltimore Estonian School History
The Baltimore Estonian School was established in 1955 by a group of Baltimore area Estonian organizations, including the Baltimore Estonian Society, the Estonian Culture Club in Maryland and the Baltimore Veterans' Association. It was established for the purpose of teaching the children of Estonian immigrants in the Baltimore area. The school is a "supplemental school" which is not meant to replace normal American school, but to supplement it by teaching children the Estonian language (grammar and literature), history and culture.
The first school day was on the 23rd of October 1955 at the International Center of the YMCA in Baltimore. There were 24 students on that first day. The school has been meeting at the Baltimore Estonian House ever since that location became available in the early 1960s. The school has been incorporated as the Baltimore Estonian Supplementary School, Inc. since 1990. In its first 45 years of existence, a total of 170 students studied at the school.
